I&#8217;ve tested video streaming via multicast with my Axis&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">P1365 MK II&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">camera, so you can see some real examples of how it works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The picture below shows an&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Axis camera<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;using&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">multicast&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">VLC software.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera to VLC via Multicast\" data-id=\"27159\" width=\"663\" data-init-width=\"732\" height=\"474\" data-init-height=\"523\" title=\"Axis camera to VLC via Multicast\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-to-VLC-via-Multicast.jpg\" data-width=\"663\" data-height=\"474\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axis P1365 MK II on VLC via multicast<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">There are different ways you can have your camera working with multicast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Keep reading to understand the details (believe me, they are <strong>very important<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Pay attention to the 3 methods described in this article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">1. Always multicast<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\"><span data-typist=\"  There are two videos lessons by the end of this article...\" data-speed=\"500\" data-highlight=\"1\" data-colors=\"var(--tcb-color-3)\" style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text; color: rgb(255, 0, 0) !important; --tcb-applied-color:rgb(255, 0, 0)  !important;\">&gt;&gt; Important:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Let&#8217;s get started with multicast for security cameras.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Multicast and Unicast for security cameras<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">OK, &nbsp;the first thing we need is to understand how multicast works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Let&#8217;s compare a network diagram with security cameras using Unicast and Multicast and then discuss how to implement multicast correctly.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Unicast<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The following diagram shows an&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Axis camera<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;ready to send a video stream to two different computers using the traditional method via&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unicast<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Unicast Network Diagram\" data-id=\"27155\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1419\" height=\"231\" data-init-height=\"456\" title=\"Unicast Network Diagram\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Unicast-Network-Diagram.jpg\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"231\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Security camera using Unicast (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">In this scenario, it&#8217;s necessary to send a separate video stream to each computer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">That&#8217;s why we use the name &#8220;<em><strong>Unicast<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, which is a 1 to 1 relationship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Now, take a look at the following diagram to understand how the camera sends a video stream to both computers in the network using their IP addresses.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera unicast diagram\" data-id=\"27151\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1418\" height=\"207\" data-init-height=\"408\" title=\"Axis camera unicast diagram\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-unicast-diagram.jpg\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"207\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Network Diagram: Security camera using unicast (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">As you can see, the camera established a connection to each computer and streamed the video twice, making it use more resources (bandwidth, CPU, memory).<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">This is just a random example where each video stream uses 1Mbps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Now imagine more computers in this scenario&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The camera will run out of resources pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Here&#8217;s where the multicast comes to the rescue.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Multicast<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Now let&#8217;s take the same scenario and use multicast to send the video stream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The following picture shows how the <strong>IP camera <\/strong>can communicate via <strong>multicast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example with multicast diagram\" data-id=\"27152\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1415\" height=\"228\" data-init-height=\"449\" title=\"Example with multicast diagram\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Example-with-multicast-diagram.jpg\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"228\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axis IP camera using multicast (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">In this scenario, the camera can send the video stream to a Multicast IP (group).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The camera sends the video stream to a switch that distributes it to the computers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">That&#8217;s pretty smart, huh? Now the camera resources are not impacted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">=&gt; That&#8217;s a simplified explanation of how multicast works. There are many more details on the topic, but I intend to make things simple to understand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Now, let&#8217;s understand the different ways you can use multicast on Axis cameras.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Multicast on Axis cameras<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Now, let&#8217;s understand the different ways you can use multicast on Axis cameras.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You can have your Axis camera streaming video to the network.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">1. Any-source Multicast (ASM)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The client (computer or other devices) sends a request to the<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;Axis camera<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Encoder, or any other Axis streaming device and asks for multicast as the transport method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">No <strong>multicast-specific network parameters<\/strong> are shared in the first communication between the client and the Axis device. These parameters are negotiated later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Here&#8217;s a picture that illustrates this process.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera SDP\" data-id=\"27197\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1157\" height=\"287\" data-init-height=\"462\" title=\"Axis camera SDP\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-SDP-commumication.png\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"287\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axis ASM (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You need to use the software on the client to communicate with the camera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Here&#8217;s the trace I got from the computer (client) and camera communication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">(<span style=\"color: rgb(255, 0, 0);\">Red <\/span>is the client and <span style=\"color: var(--tcb-color-8);\">Blue <\/span>is the Axis camera).<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera and client negotiation\" data-id=\"27183\" width=\"508\" data-init-width=\"508\" height=\"540\" data-init-height=\"540\" title=\"Axis camera and client negotiation\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-and-client-negotiation.jpg\" data-width=\"508\" data-height=\"540\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As you can see, the client initiates the communication by sending an RTSP request to the camera (camera&#8217;s IP is 192.168.0.17) on&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">port 554<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;using the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Live555<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;streaming media and then waits for the camera to reply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Note that the resolution (1920&#215;1080) and the Frame Rate (15 FPS) are informed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The Axis camera responds and informs the Options to control the video stream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Since I did not provide the credentials upfront in the command, a message pops up on the screen asking for the username and password.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As soon as I enter the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">username\/password,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;the authentication goes through. The devices can communicate based on how to<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;decode<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;the video stream (provided by the shared SDP file).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The communication proceeds, and the camera starts streaming the video.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">2. Source-specific Multicast (SSM)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In this method, the multicast&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">network parameters<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;are&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">pre-configured<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;in the Axis camera (or any other Axis device), and the information is shared in the SDP file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The client does not specify the network parameters such as the multicast IP address because the Axis device does this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Here&#8217;s how the method works&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera SSM\" data-id=\"27198\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1376\" height=\"231\" data-init-height=\"441\" title=\"Axis camera SSM\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-SSM.png\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"231\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axis SSM (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">There&#8217;s a menu in the camera you can change these parameters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Just open the setting and go to <strong>Plain Config <\/strong>&gt;&gt; <strong>Network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera menu\" data-id=\"27206\" width=\"598\" data-init-width=\"598\" height=\"137\" data-init-height=\"137\" title=\"Axis camera menu\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-menu-1.jpg\" data-width=\"598\" data-height=\"137\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You can find the<strong> multicast IP address<\/strong> in the <strong>R0 section<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis Multicast Plain Config Setup\" data-id=\"27205\" width=\"288\" data-init-width=\"288\" height=\"379\" data-init-height=\"379\" title=\"Axis Multicast Plain Config Setup\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-Multicast-Plain-Config-Setup.jpg\" data-width=\"288\" data-height=\"379\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">That&#8217;s the IP that becomes available as part of the multicast group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">When using multicast SSM, the camera dictates the IP that will be used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">See the diagram with the example.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis camera multicast diagram\" data-id=\"27153\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"1415\" height=\"204\" data-init-height=\"401\" title=\"Axis camera multicast diagram\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-multicast-diagram.jpg\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"204\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axis camera multicast diagram (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">As you can see, the camera sends the video stream to the multicast group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Now the camera uses fewer resources to stream the video to the computers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Let&#8217;s take a look at a practical example using software to connect to the camera.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">How to use VLC to connect to the Axis camera via multicast<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">I told you I could show you some real examples, right?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">So, here I have the step-step to test multicast using VLC.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Open the &#8220;<strong>Plain Config<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Network&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong>Menu;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Write down what is the Multicast address;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Open Wireshark and create a filter to such address;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Use VLC to send the command (see below) to the camera;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Enter the camera credentials;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Check the results in the VLC and Wireshark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Use the command <strong>r<\/strong><strong style=\"cursor: text;\">tsp:\/\/&lt;camera IP&gt;\/axis-media\/ssm\/media.amp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">It&#8217;s pretty simple. You use this RTSP URL which contains the method (SSM) to request a video stream from the camera using its multicast address.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Do you remember where to check the Multicast address, don&#8217;t you? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I showed that before&#8230; retake a look at the previous picture that shows the P<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lain Config&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&gt;&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Network&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Menu and Ro section. The multicast IP is there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Axis Camera Multicast Address\" data-id=\"27218\" width=\"289\" data-init-width=\"289\" height=\"51\" data-init-height=\"51\" title=\"Axis Camera Multicast Address\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-Camera-Multicast-Address.jpg\" data-width=\"289\" data-height=\"51\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You just need to use this IP to verify the multicast stream in Wireshark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; color: rgb(255, 0, 0) !important; --tcb-applied-color:rgb(255, 0, 0)  !important;\"><strong><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color:rgb(255, 0, 0)  !important;\">Attention:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color:rgb(255, 0, 0)  !important;\">&nbsp;<\/span>You do <strong>NOT <\/strong>need to change the IP multicast IP address neither use it to test the video stream. Make sure you understand that part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Open the VLC media player and go to <strong>Media <\/strong>&gt;&gt; <strong>Open Network Stream.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Enter the URL command as shown in the picture below: (use your camera&#8217;s IP).<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"VLC command to test Axis Multicast Stream\" data-id=\"27219\" width=\"523\" data-init-width=\"523\" height=\"144\" data-init-height=\"144\" title=\"VLC command to test Axis Multicast Stream\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/VLC-command-to-test-Axis-Multicast-Stream.png\" data-width=\"523\" data-height=\"144\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">As you can see, I&#8217;m using the RTSL URL to request the camera to send a video stream with HD resolution (1280&#215;720) via Multicast (using the SSM method).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">And that&#8217;s all. You can follow the traffic on Wireshark to make sure the camera is sending the traffic to the multicast group (IP).<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wireshark shows Multicast Traffic from Axis Camera\" data-id=\"27220\" width=\"719\" data-init-width=\"792\" height=\"203\" data-init-height=\"223\" title=\"Wireshark shows Multicast Traffic from Axis Camera\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Wireshark-shows-Multicast-Traffic-From-Axis-Camera.png\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"203\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">The picture shows my <strong>Axis P1365 MK II<\/strong> camera as the source and the multicast IP address as the destination using the <strong>UDP protocol<\/strong>. So it&#8217;s working correctly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">Please, please, please make sure you understand this part. It&#8217;s super important.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You do <strong>NOT <\/strong>send the request to the multicast IP address;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You do <strong>NOT <\/strong>check the box &#8220;<em><strong>always multicast video&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">You do <strong>NOT<\/strong> check any boxes related to multicast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">I&#8217;m repeating this over and over again to make sure you got it right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; cursor: text;\">It&#8217;s a bit confusing at first, and people tend to use the multicast address in the VLC RTSP URL or have the impulse to enable every multicast box. Just don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When using the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SSM method,&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it&#8217;s not necessary to have a multicast streaming video all the time.
