Just keep reading to learn more&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">The most common problem with VLC black screen<\/h2>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">If your VLC presents a black screen when streaming video from an IP camera, the problem could be related to the video card drivers or configuration.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Depending on your computer, you could use\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DirectX\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">or\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">OpenGL<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Here are some things you can do to fix the problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Update the video card driver;<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Enable\/Disable hardware acceleration;<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Change the video output (DirectX\/OpenGL);<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Enable\/Disable Windows decorations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">The following pictures show the configuration details.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Open VLC and click on <strong>Tools <\/strong>&gt;&gt; <strong>Preferences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"VLC Preferences\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/VLC-Preferences.png\" alt=\"VLC Preferences\" width=\"262\" height=\"259\" data-id=\"27279\" data-init-width=\"262\" data-init-height=\"259\" data-width=\"262\" data-height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Input\/Codecs<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, check the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hardware-accelerated decoding<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">You can change it and test it to see if that solves the problem.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"VLC Decoding\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/VLC-Decoding.png\" alt=\"VLC Decoding\" width=\"719\" height=\"238\" data-id=\"27281\" data-init-width=\"793\" data-init-height=\"262\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">On the video tab, check the &#8220;<em><strong>Enable video<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; and the &#8220;<em><strong>Window decorations<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; boxes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">You can also change the Video output to <strong>OpenGL video output<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">If you are using a remote server such as Windows Remote Desktop or Citrix, the OpenGL video output for Windows can solve the problem. (It did for me) \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"VLC OpenGL\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/VLC-OpenGL.png\" alt=\"VLC OpenGL\" width=\"719\" height=\"471\" data-id=\"27278\" data-init-width=\"798\" data-init-height=\"523\" data-width=\"719\" data-height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">These configurations work most of the time for a unicast video stream.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">VLC black screen while using multicast<\/h2>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">If you configured your Axis camera or other Axis device to work with multicast stream, make sure you follow the guidelines below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Disable the virtual and WiFi interfaces;<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Don&#8217;t change the last octets of the multicast address \u00a0set on the camera;<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Enable the &#8220;VLC Force Multicast RTP via RTSP&#8221; option on VLC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I&#8217;ve tested the different ways of using\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">multicast on Axis cameras<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and I had an experience with VLC showing a black screen with the virtual interface enabled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">So, make sure to enable only the network interface you are using.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Virtual Interface disabled\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Virtual-Interface-disabled-1.png\" alt=\"Virtual Interface disabled\" width=\"616\" height=\"375\" data-id=\"27284\" data-init-width=\"616\" data-init-height=\"375\" data-width=\"616\" data-height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">The Always multicast method is the one that usually has a problem with this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I also noticed some issues when trying to change the last two octets of the multicast video address set on the menu &#8220;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Plain Config\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&gt;&gt;\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Network\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&gt;&gt;\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">R0&#8243;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Axis camera multicast address\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Axis-camera-multicast-address.png\" alt=\"Axis camera multicast address\" width=\"286\" height=\"379\" data-id=\"27283\" data-init-width=\"286\" data-init-height=\"379\" data-width=\"286\" data-height=\"379\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you have a hard time doing VLC work with multicast, please read my other article that explains\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">how to use multicast on Axis cameras.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">The last thing you can do is to enable the &#8220;<em><strong>Force Multicast RTP via RTSP<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text; text-align: justify;\">Open the VLC preference menu and go to the bottom of the page and click &#8220;<strong>All<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"VLC show settings all\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/VLC-show-settings-all.png\" alt=\"VLC show settings all\" width=\"232\" height=\"160\" data-id=\"27307\" data-init-width=\"232\" data-init-height=\"160\" data-width=\"232\" data-height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;
