{"id":8267,"date":"2019-04-08T08:29:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T13:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/?p=8267"},"modified":"2019-07-11T06:46:56","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T11:46:56","slug":"how-to-fix-the-cctv-ground-loop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/how-to-fix-the-cctv-ground-loop\/","title":{"rendered":"How to fix the CCTV ground loop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CCTV ground loop is super annoying and many installers have a hard time facing this problem sooner or later in their careers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are searching for a way to fix the CCTV ground loop, don&#8217;t look any further because in this article, I will explain how to identify and eliminate this problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[tcb-script async=&#8221;&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js&#8221;][\/tcb-script][tcb-script]     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});[\/tcb-script]<\/p>\n<h2>What is the CCTV ground loop ?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The &#8220;<strong>Ground Loop<\/strong>&#8221; is a type of interference that generates horizontal bars rolling on the screen of a CCTV system as shown in the picture below.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CCTV ground loop problem\" width=\"720\" height=\"224\" title=\"CCTV ground loop problem\" data-id=\"8271\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/CCTV-ground-loop-problems.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a real scenario this is a little tricky, but for the sake of understanding let&#8217;s imagine that a technician uses a multimeter and places one test probe on the camera chassis and the other test probe in the DVR chassis, if there is a voltage between the two points it can generate an electric loop that circulates through the coaxial cable between the devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Measuring voltage on a ground loop\" width=\"913\" height=\"601\" title=\"Measuring voltage on a ground loop\" data-id=\"8276\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Measuring-voltage-on-a-ground-loop-1.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a perfect scenario this voltage shouldn&#8217;t exist, so make sure you can eliminate it by using the methods explained in this article.<\/p>\n<p>[tcb-script async=&#8221;&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js&#8221;][\/tcb-script][tcb-script]     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});[\/tcb-script]<\/p>\n<h2>What causes the CCTV ground loop ?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an installation, it is ideal to have the devices grounded in a single point as shown in the figure below, so there is no voltage difference between them and therefore the Ground Loop does not occur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this first scenario the three devices (D1, D2 and D3) are grounded to a common point, but there is no direct connection between them, everything is perfect.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Single point grounding\" width=\"727\" height=\"346\" title=\"Single point grounding\" data-id=\"8280\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Single-point-grounding.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this second scenario the devices (D1, D2 and D3) are connected together (with a coaxial cable for example) and are grounded to 3 points (A1, A2 and A3).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there is voltage between devices D1 and D2 for example, a loop will be generated by the coaxial cable and will circulate between A1 &#8211;&gt; D1 &#8211;&gt; D2 &#8211;&gt; A2. The same process may occur between D2 and D3.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ground loop between devices\" width=\"762\" height=\"329\" title=\"Ground loop between devices\" data-id=\"8282\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ground-loop-between-devices.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to eliminate the CCTV ground loop ?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To avoid ground loop interference problems, the best method is to ground all elements to a single point, so there will be no potential difference (voltage) between them. See the example in the illustration below:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Grounding to a single point\" width=\"720\" height=\"345\" title=\"Grounding to a single point\" data-id=\"8285\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Grounding-to-a-single-point.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Other methods to eliminate ground loop<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are some simple and other more complex ways to eliminate interference, here are some tips for what you can do in your installation:<\/p>\n<p>[tcb-script async=&#8221;&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js&#8221;][\/tcb-script][tcb-script]     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});[\/tcb-script]<\/p>\n<h3>Camera insulation<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the camera is installed in some buildings, there may be ground conduction and this can cause the problem with the ground loop, one way to solve this problem is to place a piece of insulation material such as wood or plastic between the bracket and the wall as shown in the picture below<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Camera insulation\" width=\"248\" height=\"240\" title=\"Camera insulation\" data-id=\"8287\" src=\"https:\/\/learncctv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Camera-insulation.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This type of situation can happen with installations on metal poles or buildings such as metal structures that behave like a ground.
